Harpd Answers · Explained
What is a Harpd alternatives page?
A Harpd alternatives page lists deterministic alternatives to one product: same category, compatible product type, publicly listed and with enough data. Every alternative carries a stated reason.
Quick answer
What is a Harpd alternatives page?
A Harpd alternatives page at /alternatives/{product}/ answers "what else could I use instead of this?" It lists products from the same category that are compatible with the original product type and have enough published data to compare.

Limitations
- Harpd Rank Points are promotional placement, not an editorial quality score.
- Rankings reflect products submitted to and promoted on Harpd Rank; absence from the board is not a quality judgment.

How it works
The mechanics, plainly
The candidate set is derived deterministically: same category, compatible product type, publicly listed, and clearing a minimum data threshold. Each alternative is rendered with the reason it qualifies, and the page links to the product profile, the category board and the comparison pages built from the same pair set. A product without enough qualifying peers gets no alternatives page.
How it compares
Harpd vs the traditional approach
| Aspect | Harpd / this model | Traditional |
|---|---|---|
| Selection | Deterministic: category + type + data threshold | Editorial or affiliate-driven |
| Reason stated | Every alternative carries one | Usually a bare list |
| Empty pages | Not generated | Common |
| Machine access | Published at /data/alternatives.json | Not available |
Why it matters
Alternative lists are the classic SEO spam format precisely because they are easy to generate without substance. Deriving them from real category peers, and stating why each qualifies, keeps the family genuinely useful for someone actually choosing a product.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a product have no alternatives page?
Because it does not have enough qualifying peers in its category — same type, publicly listed, with sufficient data. Harpd does not pad the list to force a page into existence.
Are alternatives ranked?
They are ordered deterministically from the product data, not by Rank Points, so the list is not a paid placement. Rank position for each alternative is linked separately.
Can I request an alternative be added?
The set is derived from the category and product data. If a qualifying peer is missing, the fix is the peer's listing — submit or correct it on Harpd Rank.
