Fate: A Free Life Roguelike Where Your Birth Chart Is the Character Class
Fate is a free browser life-roguelike by Harpd Labs: your birth date becomes a playable class built from BaZi's Ten Gods. No signup, no download.
Fate is a free, browser-based symbolic life roguelike where your birth date generates a playable character class — a “Build” shaped by the Ten Gods of the Chinese BaZi (Four Pillars) system, reimagined as game mechanics rather than fortune-telling. You play a life from age 18 through eight thematic “gates,” making choices that shape a generated story and a final Life Title. There is no sign-up, no download, and no in-game purchase. If you have ever wanted a free life simulation game that feels personal the moment you start, this is it.
This article explains what Fate is, how the BaZi framework becomes gameplay, and why a “birth chart game” turns out to be a surprisingly good narrative roguelike.
What Fate actually is
Most life-simulation games ask you to manage stats: money, health, relationships. Fate does something different. It takes the one piece of data that is uniquely yours — your birth date — and runs it through the Start-of-Spring BaZi convention to produce four pillars (Year, Month, Day, Hour), a Day Master, an element balance, and a Ten-God distribution. Each Ten God becomes a playable archetype. Your starting deck and abilities are, in effect, your “character class” for this run.
The result is a symbolic roguelike: the run is different for everyone, but the system is consistent. Two people born a day apart can get very different Builds; someone born on the same day in a different year gets a different elemental balance. The game is fiction and entertainment — it does not predict your real future, fortune, or destiny.
The Ten Gods as game archetypes
In traditional BaZi, the Ten Gods (Shi Shen) describe the relationships between your Day Master and the other elements. Fate reinterprets them as playable roles:
- Seven Killings → The Edge — pressure, risk, and decisive strikes.
- Direct Resource → The Mentor — knowledge, support, and steady growth.
- Indirect Wealth → The Opportunist — lateral gains and unexpected turns.
- Direct Officer → The Authority — structure, recognition, and rules.
Each God shows up as cards you draw and play, and as passive modifiers on your odds. A Build heavy in “Resource” plays differently from one heavy in “Killings” — just like two character classes in any roguelike.
Eight gates of a life
The story unfolds across eight thematic chapters, each a “gate” beginning at age 18:
- The Threshold — the first real choice.
- The Climb — ambition and effort.
- The Wager — risk for reward.
- The Promise — commitments to others.
- The Crown — recognition and its cost.
- The Ledger — what you owe and what you are owed.
- The Turning — the pivot point.
- The Last Light — one answer decides your Life Title.
Each gate presents scenes where you play one card (or up to two against a Gate Boss). Cards modify your success probability. The Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — cycle through generation and control relationships, creating visible combos that shift the odds as you play.
Four outcomes, real consequence
Every scene resolves into one of four outcomes: Breakthrough, Success, Setback, or Scar. Setbacks unlock Echoes; Scars add dangerous cards and recovery routes. Early choices return later as characters and “Fate Threads” — a continuity system that makes the life feel authored rather than random.
The signature mechanic is Parallel Lives. After you finish a life, you can choose a turning point, fork the timeline, and play the alternate version — then compare both outcomes side by side. It is the roguelike “what if” loop applied to a whole life.
The Last Light, and the optional AI biography
The final gate has no dice roll and no card. One answer determines your Life Title — a short, shareable summary of how this life resolved. Optionally, Fate can use AI to enrich the final biography, turning your run into a few paragraphs of prose. The game is fully playable without AI; the model only polishes the ending if you want it to.
When a run ends, Fate gives you a compact “run story” — your Life Title, Build signature, turning point, and deepest scar — formatted to share. That is the hook: a short, personal, slightly mysterious result that is fun to post.
Free, private, and frictionless
Fate is built to remove every barrier between curiosity and play:
- Free — no sign-up, no download, no in-game purchases.
- Private — your birth date is used only to generate the in-game Build; there is no account and nothing is stored or tracked.
- Universal — it runs in any modern browser with JavaScript, on desktop or mobile.
- Multilingual — available in 10 languages including English, 中文, 日本語, 한국어, Français, Deutsch, Español, Italiano, Português, and Русский.
A full playthrough takes about 10–15 minutes, which makes it easy to share and replay.
Why a “birth chart game” works as a roguelike
The clever part is that BaZi gives the game a personalized but structured foundation. Players get a Build that feels meaningful (“this is based on my birth date”) while the underlying math guarantees balance and replayability. It is the same reason roguelikes work — constrained randomness plus meaningful choice — except the constraint is drawn from something the player already cares about.
It also sidesteps the awkward parts of life sims. There is no grind, no monetization, and no win/lose state you have to optimize. You are telling a small story and seeing where it goes.
Entertainment, not prediction
We want to be explicit: Fate is fictional entertainment. The BaZi / Ten Gods system is used purely as a game-design framework. The game does not predict your real life, fortune, or destiny, and it should not be used for decisions about health, finance, or relationships. If you enjoy the framework, treat it the way you would a tarot-themed card game — atmospheric, not advisory.
